Mary Queen

Dr. Mary Queen has more than twenty years of university-level teaching experience at diverse institutions in the U.S. and the Middle East.

Dr. Queen earned a Ph.D. in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric and an Advanced Certificate in Women’s Studies from Syracuse University in 2005. As a specialist in Composition and Rhetoric, Dr. Queen primarily teaches writing and rhetoric courses to support students’ development as critical thinkers, readers, writers, and change-makers. At CMUQ, she teaches first-year undergraduate courses in academic writing. In her previous teaching position at Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ), she collaborated with a multi-disciplinary team of faculty (English, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) on redesigning the required Technical Writing course to prepare engineering students for the writing and communication skills expected in their academic and professional lives. Prior to moving to Qatar, she was a faculty member of the English Department at American University of Kuwait (AUK), teaching a range of courses from developmental writing to professional writing to various special topics courses in rhetoric.

Dr. Queen has served in a variety of leadership and administrative capacities. Her service trajectory demonstrates increasingly more responsible leadership roles and impact on the institutions she has served. At AUK, she advanced from Writing Program Coordinator and Writing Center Director to Director of Academic Advising and Learning Support Services to, ultimately, Dean of Academic Support Services, leading a team of professionals in unifying academic support to increase student learning and retention. At TAMUQ, her leadership as Director of the Writing Center and Assistant Director of the Division of Arts & Sciences promoted the importance of writing and the humanities in engineering education.

Her published research focuses on collaboration between engineering and writing faculty, digital technology, rhetorical action, and transnational feminist rhetorics. Her article “Transnational Feminist Rhetorics in a Digital World” won the Richard Ohmann Award for best article in College English.
