    Rosalyn Abbott is an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering with a courtesy appointment in Materials Science and Engineering. Professor Abbott received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering from the University of Vermont. She was subsequently a postdoctoral fellow in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Tufts University working under the supervision of Professor David Kaplan, where she developed adipose tissue engineered models.

    Amit Acharya is the Paul P. Christiano Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering. His research interests are in the areas of continuum mechanics, theoretical materials science, and applied mathematics. His primary interests are in understanding deformation, flow, and failure of solids and developing mathematical methods for describing and analyzing these phenomena.

    Acharya received his PhD in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1994. Subsequently, he completed a post-doctoral position at the University of Pennsylvania.

    From 1995-1998, he took a position as a senior research engineer in the ABAQUS Std Development group at HKS, Inc. in Providence, RI (now Simulia, Dassault Systemes). While there, Acharya was the lead developer of the *Hysteresis nonlinear viscoelastic material model and the S4 fully-integrated finite strain shell element. These are still in use in the ABAQUS general-purpose FE code. Between 1998-2000, Acharya was a research scientist at the DOE-ASCI funded Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets at UIUC before joining CMU in 2000.

His research largely focuses on the development of chemical transport models and their application to decision-making, especially related to PM2.5. His research group has developed and applied two "reduced complexity" air quality models, EASIUR and REACH, for policy evaluation. Adams also has extensive expertise in the simulation of aerosol microphysical processes, ultrafine particles and the formation of cloud condensation nuclei in global climate models. Areas of research have also included air quality benefits of decarbonization, air quality in developing countries, the effects of climate change on air quality, short-lived climate forcers, atmospheric ammonia and particulate matter formation from livestock operations, and the simulation organic particulate matter.

    Adams was selected for a Fulbright grant to collaborate with researchers at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate in Bologna, has been a Visiting Senior Research Scientist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and received the Sheldon K. Friedlander Award for outstanding doctoral thesis from the American Association for Aerosol Research. He has previously served on the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Air Quality Technical Advisory Committee and the Allegheny County Health Department’s Air Toxics New Guidelines Proposal Committee as well as service to the American Association for Aerosol Research. He has served on US EPA's Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee's PM Review Panel and other EPA advisory panels.

    Henny Admoni is an Assistant Professor in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where she leads the Human And Robot Partners (HARP) Lab. Dr. Admoni studies how to develop intelligent robots that can assist and collaborate with humans on complex tasks like preparing a meal. She is most interested in how natural human communication, like where someone is looking, can reveal underlying human intentions and can be used to improve human-robot interactions. Dr. Admoni's research has been supported by the US National Science Foundation, the US Office of Naval Research, the Paralyzed Veterans of America Foundation, and Sony Corporation. Her work has been featured by the media such as NPR's Science Friday, Voice of America News, and WESA radio.

    Previously, Dr. Admoni was a postdoctoral fellow at CMU with Siddhartha Srinivasa in the Personal Robotics Lab. She completed her PhD in Computer Science at Yale University with Professor Brian Scassellati in the Social Robotics Lab.     I am an Associate Teaching Professor of Finance at the Business Administration Program at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. My work brings together finance education, empirical research, and applied engagement with industry and the broader community. I focus on helping students and practitioners understand how financial decisions are made in real-world settings, particularly across corporate, investment, entrepreneurial, and international finance contexts. Alongside my teaching and research, I actively contribute to student research, community financial literacy initiatives, industry engagement, and institutional service at CMU Qatar.

    I am an Associate Teaching Professor of Finance at the Business Administration Program at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. My work brings together finance education, empirical research, and applied engagement with industry and the broader community. I focus on helping students and practitioners understand how financial decisions are made in real-world settings, particularly across corporate, investment, entrepreneurial, and international finance contexts.     Burcu Akinci is the head of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She earned her B.S. in civil engineering (1991) from Middle East Technical University and her M.B.A. (1993) from Bilkent University at Ankara, Turkey. After that, she earned her M.S. (1995) and her Ph.D. (2000) in civil and environmental engineering with a specialization in construction engineering and management from Stanford University.

     

    Her research interests include development of approaches to model and reason about information-rich histories of facilities, to streamline construction and facility management processes. She specifically focuses on investigating utilization and integration of building information models with data capture and tracking technologies, such as 3D imaging, and embedded sensors and radio-frequency identification systems to capture semantically-rich as-built histories of construction projects and facility operations.

     

    Akinci has one patent, two patent applications, more than 60 referred journal publications, and 80 refereed conference publications. She co-edited a book on CAD/GIS integration and another book on embedded commissioning. She has graduated more than 16 Ph.D. students and 15 M.S. thesis students, and is currently advising/co-advising four Ph.D. students.

At Heinz, Dr. Akoglu directs the Data Analytics Techniques Algorithms (DATA) Lab.

    Dr. Akoglu's research has won 7 publication awards; Best Research Paper at SIAM SDM 2019, Best Student Machine Learning Paper Runner-up at ECML PKDD 2018, Best Paper Runner-up at SIAM SDM 2016, Best Research Paper at SIAM SDM 2015, Best Paper at ADC 2014, Best Paper at PAKDD 2010, and Best Knowledge Discovery Paper at ECML PKDD 2009. She also holds 3 U.S. patents filed by IBM T. J. Watson Research Labs.     Laurence Ales is Professor of Economics at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. Professor Ales is currently the Senior Associate Dean for Education at the Tepper School overseeing all the educational portfolio of the school. He joined CMU in 2008. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 2008 and a B.S. in Physics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His research focuses on the design of tax policy and on the labor implication of technological change. Recent work has analyzed how to tax the labor income of highly paid CEOs and how taxes should be designed taking into account location of work and marital status. Looking at the impact of technology Professor Ales has  studied how different types of technologies generate different patterns of task automation. His research has been published in journals such as Econometrica, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of Economic Theory.  At the Tepper School, Professor Ales currently teaches courses for the MBA program and for Executive Education.

    The CSL also developed a unique project course on corporate entrepreneurship, in which diverse teams of graduate students partner with large companies to test and develop real startup ideas brought by the corporations.

    In addition to his work at CMU, Sean is also joined Birchmere Ventures as a Partner in 2012. Birchmere focuses on seed-stage SaaS and marketplace startup investments. The firm is headquartered in Pittsburgh with a second office in San Francisco.

    Prior to joining Birchmere, Sean spent 12 years founding, building, and selling businesses in the software and media industries. He was Chief Operating Officer of ReadWriteWeb acquired by the private-equity rollup SAY Media to strengthen its technology channel.
