Joseph Mertz

Joseph Mertz is a Teaching Professor and Director of Carnegie Mellon’s Information Systems Program, a joint undergraduate program of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Heinz College of Information Systems, Public Policy, and Management. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University, following degrees in computer science from the University of Southern California and Pennsylvania State University. Over several decades, Professor Mertz has been a leader in experiential and service-learning–based information systems education, integrating rigorous technical instruction with real-world problem solving and community engagement. He is the founder and director of Technology Consulting in the Global Community and a lead instructor in the Information Systems Consulting Project capstone, initiatives that connect students with nonprofit, educational, and government partners locally and globally. His work has been recognized with the Mark Gelfand Service Award for Educational Outreach, and he has raised over $1.6 million to support student outreach and global engagement.
