Joseph Mertz is a Teaching Professor and Director of Carnegie Mellon’s Information Systems Program, a joint undergraduate program of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Heinz College of Information Systems, Public Policy, and Management. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University, following degrees in computer science from the University of Southern California and Pennsylvania State University. Over several decades, Professor Mertz has been a leader in experiential and service-learning–based information systems education, integrating rigorous technical instruction with real-world problem solving and community engagement. He is the founder and director of Technology Consulting in the Global Community and a lead instructor in the Information Systems Consulting Project capstone, initiatives that connect students with nonprofit, educational, and government partners locally and globally. His work has been recognized with the Mark Gelfand Service Award for Educational Outreach, and he has raised over $1.6 million to support student outreach and global engagement.

Professor Mertz teaches project-based courses that place students in consulting roles with real clients, emphasizing technical excellence, collaboration, communication, and ethical decision-making. He is a long-time lead instructor for the Information Systems Consulting Project capstone and has developed and taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in information systems, distributed systems, technology consulting, and technology for global and community development. Through his courses, students work with nonprofit organizations, schools, startups, and government agencies on applied technology projects that address authentic organizational needs.
