BIO
Carol J. Smith leads research on trustworthy, human-centered, and responsible artificial intelligence (RAI) and human-machine teaming as a Principal Research Scientist for the AI Division at the CMU Software Engineering Institute. Carol teaches courses for the CMU Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII).
Her work improves the user experiences (UX) and interactions with the nation’s AI and ML systems, robotics, and other complex and emerging technologies. Carol has been conducting research to improve the human experience with complex systems across industries for over 20 years, and researching and advocating for ethics and responsible approaches for human-machine teaming with AI systems since 2015.
