Marvin Sirbu

Marvin Sirbu is Professor of Engineering and Public Policy, Industrial Administration, and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, and founder of Carnegie Mellon’s Information Networking Institute which provides graduate and executive education in information networking technology, business and policy. Prior to moving to CMU in 1985, Professor Sirbu taught at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, and directed MIT's Research Program in Communications Policy. He has served since 1999 on the FCC Technological Advisory Council, numerous panels for the U.S. National Research Council and the Office of Technology Assessment, and on the boards of several telecom-related corporations. He holds two patents in the area of electronic commerce.

Professor Sirbu's research interests are in telecommunications and information technology, policy and management. Recent research has focused on multi-network access, next generation television; economic impacts of broadband; future Internet architecture; and spectrum policy. Previous research areas include government policies to stimulate innovation, office automation, economics of standards, technology, economics and policy of broadband access, micropayments over the Internet, electronic commerce, and network economics.
