Kemal Oflazer

Kemal Oflazer received his PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, and his MS in CS and BS in EE degrees from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. He is currently a faculty member at the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.  He has held visiting positions at the Computing Research Laboratory at New Mexico State University and the Language Technologies Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. Before joining CMU-Qatar, he was on the faculties of Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey, and Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. 

Kemal Oflazer is currently the Specialty Chief Editor for Frontiers in Artifical Intelligence - Language and Computation. He has served or is currently serving as an Editorial Board Member for Computational Linguistics, Journal of AI Research, Machine Translation, Research on Language and Computation, Natural Language Engineering and Language Resources and Evaluation, and has been a Book Reviews Editor of Natural Language Engineering and member of the advisory boards of John Benjamins NLP Book Series, Springer Briefs in NLP, and also of EACL. He has served as the Program Co-Chair of ACL-05 -- 43rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics and was an area chair and program committee member for many other conferences and workshops.

He has worked extensively on developing NLP techniques and resources for Turkish. His current research interests are in statistical machine translation into morphologically complex languages, using NLP for language learning and machine learning for computational morphology.
