    Mustafa Akan is an Associate Professor of Operations Management at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University. His thesis received the Best Dissertation Award of the Aviation Applications Section of INFORMS in 2008. He held the Xerox Faculty Chair in 2009 and served as the Operations Management and Manufacturing Ph. D. program coordinator in 2009-2011. He is the co-recipient of the 2009 INFORMS Best Paper in Service Science, POMS 2012 Healthcare Best Paper awards, and the 2013 Lave-Weil Prize. Dr. Akan won the Gerald L. Thompson Teaching Award in 2014 at Carnegie Mellon University. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 2014.
    Mustafa Akan is an Associate Professor of Operations Management at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University.     Laurence Ales is currently the interim Dean of Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. A Professor of Economics, he joined CMU in 2008. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 2008 and a B.S. in Physics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His research focuses on the design of tax policy and on the labor implication of technological change. Recent work has analyzed how to tax the labor income of highly paid CEOs and how taxes should be designed taking into account location of work and marital status. Looking at the impact of technology Professor Ales has  studied how different types of technologies generate different patterns of task automation. His research has been published in journals such as Econometrica, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of Economic Theory.  At the Tepper School, Professor Ales currently teaches courses for the MBA program and for Executive Education.

    Michael’s teaching experience includes 24+ years in higher education as a full-time (16 years) and part-time (7+ years) non-tenure track faculty instructor. He has extensive experience creating and teaching courses in management, OB, leadership, and their sub-disciplines at the Associate, Bachelor, and Master levels - onsite and online. 

    In his roles as an analyst, operations manager, and corporate trainer, Michael used his communication, leadership, and organization management skills to lead teams to operational excellence and stakeholder satisfaction, including creation and execution of training and development programs.

    In addition to his university teaching, Michael currently teaches courses with the American Management Association. He is a certified leadership coach and has consulted for a number of clients on leadership development, process improvement, and customer service.     Sean Ammirati is Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. In addition to teaching, he is also the Co-Founder and Director of the Carnegie Mellon Corporate Startup Lab (CSL). The CSL is a Swartz Center initiative that has conducted research and developed tools to help companies better adapt and integrate entrepreneurial best practices into their own innovation processes. The frameworks and tools have helped innovators become more successful entrepreneurs and helped leaders better encourage entrepreneurship and manage their innovation portfolios.

    The CSL also developed a unique project course on corporate entrepreneurship, in which diverse teams of graduate students partner with large companies to test and develop real startup ideas brought by the corporations.

    In addition to his work at CMU, Sean is also joined Birchmere Ventures as a Partner in 2012. Birchmere focuses on seed-stage SaaS and marketplace startup investments. The firm is headquartered in Pittsburgh with a second office in San Francisco.

    Prior to joining Birchmere, Sean spent 12 years founding, building, and selling businesses in the software and media industries. He was Chief Operating Officer of ReadWriteWeb acquired by the private-equity rollup SAY Media to strengthen its technology channel. Prior to that, Sean was the co-founder and CEO of mSpoke, which was LinkedIn's first acquisition. His first startup was Peak Strategy, which was acquired by Morgan Stanley.

    He recently completed his first book The Science of Growth, which was released by St Martin's Press in April 2016 and was subsequently translated and published in Korean and Mandarin.

    Finally, Sean is also the host of one of the most popular podcasts on corporate innovation – Agile Giants which you can find on your favorite podcasting platform.

In particular, I focus on network relations, employing a variety of methods, including content analysis, historical data, and experimental approaches. Substantively, my main areas of interests are fraud and entrepreneurship.

    After relocating from Montreal, QC to Pittsburgh, PA at the height of the pandemic in fall 2020, Bajeux-Besnainou provides dynamic leadership for the academic, fundraising, financial and administrative aspects of the Tepper Business School of Carnegie Mellon University. The school offers degrees from the undergraduate level through doctoral levels and executive education programs and is consistently ranked among the top 10-20 business schools in the United States. The Tepper School prepares nearly 1,500 students for the future and the uncertainties ahead through innovative programming offered in: accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, leadership, marketing, production/operations management, organizational behavior, quantitative analysis/statistics, and operations research, and technology. Works closely with students, faculty, and staff within Tepper and across campus to create collaborative academic and research opportunities, and to continue the school’s efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Before his academic career, he was CEO of a cancer care center, co-founded and sold a high-tech start-up, and was a management consultant with both Bain & Company and Ernst & Young. He recently was Chair of the Management Education and Development (MED) Division of the Academy of Management, serves on the editorial boards of several journals, and recently served as a research advisor to a management consulting firm.

    She did her PhD in Strategic Management from McGill University and her Bachelors in Economics and Master’s in Public Administration from Cornell University followed by a second Masters in Management from Queen's University's Smith College of Business. 

    During the course of her career, Dr. Bhattacharyay has held several teaching and/or research positions at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management, Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, Queen's University, Niagara University, University of Hawaii at Hilo and McGill University. She was a visiting scholar at the Graduate Research Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo and had worked at the Research Institute for Economy Trade and Industry (RIETI), a leading research and policy think tank in Japan. 

     

    Her research interests are in the following areas: Strategy and Innovation, Family Business, Corporate Governance, Management Education and Development.

    Patrick Blonien is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University.  He earned his Ph.D. in Finance at Rice University in 2024 and holds a B.B.A. in Business Fellows with secondary majors in Finance and Mathematics and a minor in Statistics from Baylor University in 2018.  

     

    His solo work has received several accolades, including The Brattle Group Ph.D. Candidate Award for Outstanding Research in 2023, the Finance Theory Group Summer School Best Paper Award (ex aequo) in 2023, and Runner-up for the Finance Theory Group Best Paper Award on the Job Market in 2024. His primary research area is financial market design, with work on the role of occasionally occurring fixed-price trading sessions and the benefits of market closures in the electronic era. Additionally, his secondary research agenda uses structural models to quantify the quality and extent of information in voting and trading.

    Peter Boatwright is the director and co-founder of the Integrated Innovation Institute, which offers graduate and undergraduate university education to train the world's next elite innovators of product and services. As an expert in innovation education, he has coauthored three books and teaches coursework on related topics such as product innovation, brand strategy, new product management, pricing strategy, and market research.

    His research interests include product development processes and marketing of new products, consumer response models, analysis of promotional activities, Bayesian econometrics, and consumer response to assortment. A proponent of interdisciplinary research, he has collaborated with colleagues at Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering, the School of Design, and the Department of Statistics to develop new education programs and research findings about customers and their decisions. His scholarly research has been published in leading research journals including Marketing Science, Management Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Decision Analysis, and Quantitative Marketing and Economics.

    Professor Boatwright has taught courses on new product management, pricing strategy, digital marketing, product development, brand strategy, and marketing research as well as various courses in statistics.

    In his work, Peter has consulted for leading companies across diverse industries. He has collaborated with several industry leaders, including Nissan, Apple, International Truck and Engine (Navistar), Campbell's, Philips-Respironics, Bayer, Bosch, Merck, Mindtree, MSA (Mine Safety Appliances), Procter and Gamble, Lubrizol, McKesson, GlaxoSmithKline, New Balance, DesignAdvanceSystems, Hewlett Packard, and Lockheed Martin.

    Peter has been with Carnegie Mellon University since 1997, joining as a faculty member of the Tepper School of Business. In his current role in the Tepper School, Peter serves as an Allan D. Shocker Professor of Marketing and New Product Development and has taught business coursework at CMU's campus in Doha, Qatar.

    Peter is originally from Denton, Texas. He spends his free time focused on being a dad.

    Clara Burke teaches classes on business presenting and writing, interpersonal and leadership communications, and conflict resolution. Her graduate and undergraduate classes focus on helping students become agile communicators and inclusive business leaders.

    Before joining the faculty at Tepper, Dr. Burke taught business communication at the Wisconsin School of Business. She also taught writing in the UW-Madison Department of English, coached writers at the UW-Madison Writing Center, led the online writing center, and served as an editorial assistant and copyeditor for two academic journals, Contemporary Literature and Ecological Restoration.

    Len Caric along with his long-time business partner Jim Rudolph, purchased the George J. Howe Company in December 2021. The Howe Company sells candy, nuts and coffee throughout 14 states through grocery retailers and the hospitality industry. Len is CEO. Len lead the acquisition of two other companies into the George J. Howe Company, Mister Snacks and most recently the roasting plant of O’Neill Coffee. These are Len’s third, fourth and fifth businesses that he searched and acquired in his career. In addition, Len and Jim open Smashed Waffles, a retail fast casual restaurant in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The goal is to prove the concept and then to franchise.

    Len led a group of investors in early 2014 to purchased Uncle Charley’s Sausage Company, a regional fresh sausage company located in Vandergrift, PA serving seven states. Len was President and Chief Executive Officer. Len successfully sold the business to a strategic buyer, Village Gourmet LLC, in September 2020.

    Len was President of McKnight Cylinder in Ruffs Dale, PA. He, along with an investor group purchased the company in 1998 and sold the business to AmeriGas. In 2010, Len co-founded AmericanArk Films with Mark Fallon. Len is an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. Len was the Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of The Women and Girls’ Foundation and served on the Board of Directors of The Blackburn Center and the North American Meat Institute.

    Len received a BA degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN and earned his Master in Industrial Administration degree with a concentration in Entrepreneurship from Carnegie Mellon University’s Graduate School of Industrial Administration now known as the Tepper School of Business.
