    Henny Admoni is an Assistant Professor in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where she leads the Human And Robot Partners (HARP) Lab. Dr. Admoni studies how to develop intelligent robots that can assist and collaborate with humans on complex tasks like preparing a meal. She is most interested in how natural human communication, like where someone is looking, can reveal underlying human intentions and can be used to improve human-robot interactions. Dr. Admoni's research has been supported by the US National Science Foundation, the US Office of Naval Research, the Paralyzed Veterans of America Foundation, and Sony Corporation. Her work has been featured by the media such as NPR's Science Friday, Voice of America News, and WESA radio.

    Previously, Dr. Admoni was a postdoctoral fellow at CMU with Siddhartha Srinivasa in the Personal Robotics Lab. She completed her PhD in Computer Science at Yale University with Professor Brian Scassellati in the Social Robotics Lab.     Leman Akoglu is the Heinz College Dean's Associate Professor of Information Systems. She also holds courtesy appointments in the Computer Science Department (CSD) and the Machine Learning Department (MLD) of School of Computer Science (SCS). Prior to this, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University since receiving her Ph.D. from CSD/SCS of Carnegie Mellon University in 2012.

    Dr. Akoglu’s research interests span a wide range of data mining and machine learning topics with a focus on algorithmic problems arising in graph mining, pattern discovery, social and information networks, and especially anomaly mining; outlier, fraud, and event detection. At Heinz, Dr. Akoglu directs the Data Analytics Techniques Algorithms (DATA) Lab.

    Dr. Akoglu's research has won 7 publication awards; Best Research Paper at SIAM SDM 2019, Best Student Machine Learning Paper Runner-up at ECML PKDD 2018, Best Paper Runner-up at SIAM SDM 2016, Best Research Paper at SIAM SDM 2015, Best Paper at ADC 2014, Best Paper at PAKDD 2010, and Best Knowledge Discovery Paper at ECML PKDD 2009. She also holds 3 U.S. patents filed by IBM T. J. Watson Research Labs. Dr. Akoglu is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award (2015) and US Army Research Office Young Investigator award (2013).     He previously served as a visiting scientist in the Google Brain group; co-founder of deep learning startup Marianas Labs; co-founder and CTO of an Internet Service Provider in Salt Lake City; a biology lab assistant; and a rock climbing instructor.

    His interests center on computer systems in the networked environment and practical applications of deep learning to interesting systems.

    I received an MS in computer science in 1992, then worked as a software engineer in Boulder and Denver, CO, for 15 years before returning to school at Oregon State to pursue a doctorate. I enjoy the work of software engineering, but I was motivated to move into academic research by a desire to improve the tools I was using.

    My dissertation research involved studying the work practices of scientific modelers (specifically cognitive modelers: psychologists who model cognition in order to understand human behavior). My approach involves designing a tool that can capture and make explicit the changing, task-specific "evaluation abstractions" that are implicit in a modeler's exploration of model output. The research has involved qualitative and quantitative empirical methods, language design, and implementation of an experimental tool (an Eclipse plugin implemented in Scala) to support modelers at the Air Force Research Laboratory who use the ACT-R and RML cognitive modeling languages.

    My current research focuses on studying coordination, allocation of effort, diffusion of practices, and skill learning among software developers, with the goal of improving the sustainability of open-source infrastructure and growing and diversifying the workforce of CS and IT professionals. I use data mining techniques to study software developers in real-world projects and in the classroom, complemented by interviews and surveys. Most recently I have been investigating ways to measure and improve the effectiveness of project-based learning techniques in online computer science education.

Dr. Breaux's research program searches for new methods and tools for developing correct software specifications and ensuring that software systems conform to those specifications in a transparent, reliable and trustworthy manner. This includes demonstrating compliance with U.S. and international accessibility, privacy and security laws, policies and standards. Dr. Breaux is the Director of the Requirements Engineering Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Breaux has several publications in ACM and IEEE-sponsored journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Breaux is a member of the ACM SIGSOFT, IEEE Computer Society and USACM Public Policy Committee.
    Prior to coming to the Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Breaux received the Doctorate of Philosophy in Computer Science from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2009. Dr. Breaux also holds Baccalaureate degrees in Computer and Information Science from the University of Oregon and in Anthropology from the University of Houston. He has conducted research at the Institute for Defense Analyses, the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Laboratory, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue University. In 2000, Dr. Breaux served as a volunteer in the United States Peace Corps in Mongolia, before transitioning from anthropology to computer science.

Dr. Breaux was first introduced to the field of Requirements Engineering by his undergraduate adviser, Dr. Stephen Fickas, at the University of Oregon whose influence includes requirements monitoring, requirements negotiation and ephemeral requirements. Under the guidance of Dr. Annie Antón, Dr. Breaux has extended his interests to include the societal impact of system requirements on privacy and security in their "ground-breaking" work to acquire software requirements from policies and U.S. federal and state regulations.

    David Brumley is an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University with a primary appointment in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and a courtesy appointment in the Computer Science Department. He is also the previous Director of CyLab, the CMU Security and Privacy Institute. His research focuses on software security.

    Prof. Brumley received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, an MS in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado. He served as a Computer Security Officer for Stanford University from 1998-2002 and handled thousands of computer security incidents in that capacity. He is the faculty mentor for the CMU Hacking Team Plaid Parliament of Pwning (PPP), which is ranked internationally as one of the top teams in the world according to ctftime.org. The team was ranked #1 in 2011, #2 in 2012, and #1 in 2013, and won DefCon 2013. He received the USENIX Security best paper awards in 2003 and 2007, an ICSE distinguished paper award in 2014.

    Prof. Brumley honors include being selected for the 2010 DARPA CSSP program and 2013 DARPA Information Science and Technology Advisory Board, a 2010 NSF CAREER award, a 2010 United States Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Obama (the highest award in the US for early career scientists according to wikipedia), and a 2013 Sloan Foundation award.

He received his undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Business from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. Choset received his Masters and PhD from Caltech in 1991 and 1996. Choset's research group reduces complicated high-dimensional problems found in robotics to low-dimensional simpler ones for design, analysis, and planning. Motivated by applications in confined spaces, Choset has created a comprehensive program in modular, high DOF, and multi- robot systems, which has led to basic research in mechanism design, path planning, motion planning, and estimation. This work has been supported by both industry and government; DOD support includes two MURIs, one of which Choset was the CO-PI, a young investigator award, and multi-PI awards for modular systems. Choset.s group has produced over 60 journal papers (including 2 in Science and one in Proceedings of the National Academies of Sceince), 180 conference papers and 15 patents. Choset.s work has also been recognized by several best paper awards and nominations at ICRA, IROS and other robotics meetings. Choset's research program has made contributions to challenging and strategically significant problems in diverse areas such as surgery, manufacturing, infrastructure inspection, and search and rescue. In addition to publications, this work has led to Choset, along with his students, to form several companies including Medrobotics, for surgical systems, Hebi Robotics, for modular robots, and Bito Robotics for autonomous guided vehicles. Recently, Choset.s surgical snake robot cleared the FDA and has been in use in the US and Europe since. Choset also leads multi-PI projects centered on manufacturing: (1) automating the programming of robots for auto-body painting; (2) the development of mobile manipulators for agile and flexible fixture-free manufacturing of large structures in aerospace, and (3) the creation of a data-robot ecosystem for rapid manufacturing in the commercial electronics industry. This year, Choset co-lead the formation of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, which is $250MM national institute advancing both technology development and education for robotics in manufacturing. Finally, Choset is a founding Editor of the journal .Science Robotics. and is currently serving on the editorial board of IJRR.

    In 2002 the MIT Technology Review elected Choset as one of its top 100 innovators in the world under 35. In 2014, Popular Science selected Choset's medical robotics work as the Best of What's New in Health Care. He received his bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Duke University in 1984, and a PhD in Computer Science from Rutgers University in 1990. From 1990 to 2000 Dr. Cohen worked at AT&T Bell Labs and later AT&T Labs-Research, and from April 2000 to May 2002 Dr. Cohen worked at Whizbang Labs, a company specializing in extracting information from the web. From 2002 to 2018, Dr. Cohen worked at Carnegie Mellon University in the Machine Learning Department, with a joint appointment in the Language Technology Institute, as an Associate Research Professor, a Research Professor, and a Professor. Dr. Cohen also was the Director of the Undergraduate Minor in Machine Learning at CMU and co-Director of the Master of Science in ML Program.

    Dr. Cohen is a past president of the International Machine Learning Society. In the past he has also served as an action editor for the the AI and Machine Learning series of books published by Morgan Claypool, for the journal Machine Learning, the journal Artificial Intelligence, the Journal of Machine Learning Research, and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research.     Lorrie Faith Cranor is the Director and Bosch Distinguished Professor in Security and Privacy Technologies of CyLab and the FORE Systems University Professor of Computer Science and of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. She directs the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (CUPS) and co-directs the MSIT-Privacy Engineering masters program. She was founding co-director of the Collaboratory Against Hate: Research and Action Center at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. In 2016 she was on leave from CMU while serving as Chief Technologist at the US Federal Trade Commission, working in the office of Chairwoman Ramirez. She is also a co-founder of Wombat Security Technologies, Inc, a security awareness training company that was acquired by Proofpoint. She came to CMU in December 2003 after seven years at AT&T Labs-Research. While at AT&T she also taught in the Stern School of Business at New York University.

    Dr. Cranor is a leading researcher in both online privacy and usable privacy and security, and has co-authored over 200 research papers in these areas. She has played a key role in building the usable privacy and security research community, having co-edited the seminal book Security and Usability (O'Reilly 2005), and founded the Symposium On Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS). She also cofounded the Conference on Privacy Engineering Practice and Respect (PEPR). She has testified about privacy issues at a Congressional hearing and at workshops held by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission. She chaired the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) Specification Working Group at the World Wide Web Consortium and authored the book Web Privacy with P3P (O'Reilly 2002).

    In 2003 Dr. Cranor was named one of the top 100 innovators 35 or younger by Technology Review magazine. In 2014 she was named an ACM Fellow for her contributions to usable privacy and security research and education, and in 2016 she was named an IEEE Fellow for her contributions to privacy engineering. In 2017 she was elected to the ACM CHI Academy. She is a recipient of the 2018 ACM CHI Social Impact Award and the 2018 IAPP Privacy Leadership Award. In 2020 she was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She received an Honorary Doctorate in Informatics from Università della Svizzera Italiana in 2022. She has also received an Alumni Achievement Award from the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, the 2022 Carnegie Mellon Distinguished Professor of Engineering Award, and (with colleagues) the 2018 IEEE Cybersecurity Award for Practice and 2019 Carnegie Mellon University Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence. Dr. Cranor was appointed a Privacy by Design (PbD) Ambassador by the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada.

    Dr. Cranor is frequently quoted in the press, and has appeared on the Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, CNN Financial News, NPR Morning Edition, NPR Science Friday, and NPR All Things Considered. Her TED talk on passwords has been viewed over 1.6 million times and was featured entertainment on Delta Airlines.

    Dr. Cranor serves on a number of boards and working groups, including the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) Board of Directors, the Computing Research Association Board of Directors, the Aspen Institute Cybersecurity Group, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) advisory board, and The Future of Privacy Forum Advisory Board. She is has been a member of the IAPP Certified Information Privacy Technolgist Exam Development Board and the IAPP Privacy Engineering Section Advisory Board. She previously served on the Electronic Frontier Foundation Board of Directors. She is also a commissioned Kentucky Colonel and a member of USACM. In 2000 she served on the Federal Trade Commission Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security. She has also served on the editorial boards of several journals.

    Dr. Cranor has consulted for companies and non-profits on privacy policies, P3P, usable privacy and security, and technology policy. She has served as an expert witness in patent litigation, privacy cases, and in cases challenging the constitutionality of Internet harmful-to-minors laws, including the ACLU's successful challenge to the 1998 Children's Online Protection Act.

    Dr. Cranor has been a vocal advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has successfully advocated for expanded childcare options, lactation rooms, and family-friendly policies at Carnegie Mellon University, and played an active role on university committees on inclusion, diversity, and well-being. She is a mentor to a diverse set of students, postdocs, and junior faculty.

    Dr. Cranor received her doctorate degree in Engineering & Policy from Washington University in St. Louis in 1996. She also holds an undergraduate degree and two masters degrees from Washington University. While in graduate school she helped found Crossroads, the ACM Student Magazine, and served as the publication's editor-in-chief for two years.

    Dr. Cranor enjoys spending time with her husband, Chuck and her adult children ShaneMaya, and Nina. She plays the C flute and bass flute in local flute choirs and in her family band, Unanticipated Fun. She has served as a Pittsburgh Dynamo Youth Soccer board member, vice president, and age-level commissioner, and founded Dynamoms, an educational soccer program for women over 30 with little or no experience playing soccer. Since 2004 she has served as an Allegheny County, PA elections poll worker. She has also served as president of the Parent Teacher Organization at her kids' school.

    Dr. Cranor practices yoga, is an avid photographer and quilter, and sews her own dresses with pockets. She spent the 2012-2013 academic year on sabbatical as a fellow in the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University where she worked on fiber arts projects that combined her interests in privacy and security, quilting, computers, and technology. She has won awards in local and national quilt competitions, and several of her quilts have been featured on the covers of books and journals. She had a solo exhibit of her quilts at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and one of her quilts was featured in Science magazine. Two of her quilts as well as her "bad password" dress are now in the privacy art collection of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

She is also a co-founder of Wombat Security Technologies, Inc, a security awareness training company that was acquired by Proofpoint. She came to CMU in December 2003 after seven years at AT&T Labs-Research. While at AT&T she also taught in the Stern School of Business at New York University.

    Dr. Cranor is a leading researcher in both online privacy and usable privacy and security, and has co-authored over 200 research papers in these areas. She has played a key role in building the usable privacy and security research community, having co-edited the seminal book Security and Usability (O'Reilly 2005), and founded the Symposium On Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS). She also cofounded the Conference on Privacy Engineering Practice and Respect (PEPR). She has testified about privacy issues at a Congressional hearing and at workshops held by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission. She chaired the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) Specification Working Group at the World Wide Web Consortium and authored the book Web Privacy with P3P (O'Reilly 2002).

    In 2003 Dr. Cranor was named one of the top 100 innovators 35 or younger by Technology Review magazine. In 2014 she was named an ACM Fellow for her contributions to usable privacy and security research and education, and in 2016 she was named an IEEE Fellow for her contributions to privacy engineering. In 2017 she was elected to the ACM CHI Academy. She is a recipient of the 2018 ACM CHI Social Impact Award and the 2018 IAPP Privacy Leadership Award. In 2020 she was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She received an Honorary Doctorate in Informatics from Università della Svizzera Italiana in 2022. She has also received an Alumni Achievement Award from the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, the 2022 Carnegie Mellon Distinguished Professor of Engineering Award, and (with colleagues) the 2018 IEEE Cybersecurity Award for Practice and 2019 Carnegie Mellon University Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence. Dr. Cranor was appointed a Privacy by Design (PbD) Ambassador by the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada.

    Dr. Cranor is frequently quoted in the press, and has appeared on the Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, CNN Financial News, NPR Morning Edition, NPR Science Friday, and NPR All Things Considered. Her TED talk on passwords has been viewed over 1.6 million times and was featured entertainment on Delta Airlines.

    Dr. Cranor serves on a number of boards and working groups, including the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) Board of Directors, the Computing Research Association Board of Directors, the Aspen Institute Cybersecurity Group, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) advisory board, and The Future of Privacy Forum Advisory Board. She is has been a member of the IAPP Certified Information Privacy Technolgist Exam Development Board and the IAPP Privacy Engineering Section Advisory Board. She previously served on the Electronic Frontier Foundation Board of Directors. She is also a commissioned Kentucky Colonel and a member of USACM. In 2000 she served on the Federal Trade Commission Advisory Committee on Online Access and Security. She has also served on the editorial boards of several journals.

    Dr. Cranor has consulted for companies and non-profits on privacy policies, P3P, usable privacy and security, and technology policy. She has served as an expert witness in patent litigation, privacy cases, and in cases challenging the constitutionality of Internet harmful-to-minors laws, including the ACLU's successful challenge to the 1998 Children's Online Protection Act.

    Dr. Cranor has been a vocal advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has successfully advocated for expanded childcare options, lactation rooms, and family-friendly policies at Carnegie Mellon University, and played an active role on university committees on inclusion, diversity, and well-being. She is a mentor to a diverse set of students, postdocs, and junior faculty.

    Dr. Cranor received her doctorate degree in Engineering & Policy from Washington University in St. Louis in 1996. She also holds an undergraduate degree and two masters degrees from Washington University. While in graduate school she helped found Crossroads, the ACM Student Magazine, and served as the publication's editor-in-chief for two years.

    Dr. Cranor enjoys spending time with her husband, Chuck and her adult children ShaneMaya, and Nina. She plays the C flute and bass flute in local flute choirs and in her family band, Unanticipated Fun. She has served as a Pittsburgh Dynamo Youth Soccer board member, vice president, and age-level commissioner, and founded Dynamoms, an educational soccer program for women over 30 with little or no experience playing soccer. Since 2004 she has served as an Allegheny County, PA elections poll worker. She has also served as president of the Parent Teacher Organization at her kids' school.

    Dr. Cranor practices yoga, is an avid photographer and quilter, and sews her own dresses with pockets. She spent the 2012-2013 academic year on sabbatical as a fellow in the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University where she worked on fiber arts projects that combined her interests in privacy and security, quilting, computers, and technology. She has won awards in local and national quilt competitions, and several of her quilts have been featured on the covers of books and journals. She had a solo exhibit of her quilts at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and one of her quilts was featured in Science magazine. Two of her quilts as well as her "bad password" dress are now in the privacy art collection of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

    Dan DeBlasio is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Ray and Stephanie Lane Computational Biology, a position he has been in since Fall of 2023. He is also the Director of the Integrated Masters in Computational Biology and Co-Assisitant Director of the MS in Computational Biology (MSCB) [with DJ Braiser]. In addition, he is the coordinator of Undergraduate Research for the Computational Biology Department. 

     

    Dr. DeBlasio's course coordination focuses on algorithmic and computational foundations with applications in Computational Biology. Since arriving at CMU on the Teaching Track his courses offered are Algorithms and Advanced Data Structures, Essentials of Mathematics and Statistics, and Introduction to Computational Biology. He also leads the Professional Issues course for MSCB, MSAS, and the Integrated Masters in CB. His research focuses on similar areas to those in which his courses are offered, but additionally DeBlasio has worked on projects related to the use of Machine Learning to identify Unresolved Resident Space Objects from Hyperspectral Imagry.

Fernando’s work has received special recognition and awards at SIGIR, CIKM, CSCW, WSDM, ISCRAM, and ECIR. He is the recipient of the 2017 British Computer Society Karen Spärck Jones Award and holds a CIFAR AI Chair. Fernando has co-organized several NIST TREC tracks, WSDM (2013), Strategic Workshop on Information Retrieval (2018), FAccT (2019), SIGIR (2021), and the CIFAR Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and the Curation of Culture (2019).  He received his BS in Computer Science from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and his MS and PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
